Lee Majors wanted to be a coach after his football dreams were crushed
Posted: August 1, 2024, 1:38PMWe hate to break it to you, but Lee Majors didn't want to be a stuntman like his character Colt Seavers when he was younger. That's hard to believe, right? Because he played the Fall Guy character so well that you'd think he was destined to be an actor from the start!
We're all aware that sometimes, your childhood dreams don't come true. It's a tough pill to swallow, but most of the time, it's for the better. It doesn't mean you're a failure; there's just something better for you.
Lee Majors wanted to be a football coach after graduating from college. If you asked yourself, 'How did he go from wanting to read a playbook to reading scripts?' We'll tell you.
After transferring from Indiana State University, Majors competed in sports at Eastern Kentucky University in 1959. In a game that would change the course of his life, he suffered a severe back injury, which left him paralyzed for 14 days. This was the end of his athletic career, but it became the beginning of a new chapter.
Instead of letting his injury define him, Majors turned to acting and had roles in many minor stage productions. He graduated with a degree in history and physical education. During this time, sports would still cross his mind, and he decided to be a football coach.
That dream fell through, although he did receive an offer to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals football team (now known as the Arizona Cardinals).
He chose to move to Los Angeles instead and was persuaded by fellow actors to attend an acting school. A year later, he appeared in episodes of Gunsmoke and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. Yet his role in The Big Valley, for which he was chosen out of 400 actors, truly launched his career.
