Robert Conrad had to fight for Black Sheep Squadron to get a second season
Posted: March 21, 2025, 11:33AMA star wouldn't fight for their show because they can move on to the next production. That's what journalist R.D. Heldenfels wrote in the Daily Press in 1977 about Black Sheep Squadron and Robert Conrad. In his words, "How many really arrogant stars would spend close to a year lobbying to save their programs? A star would pack, pick up his check, and do cameos in disaster pictures."
Robert Conrad intensely despised being called what many in Hollywood consider a compliment. In his opinion, the only "stars" were the ones in the sky. Black Sheep Squadron was initially scrapped after season one, but Conrad fought for a second chance. Not only did the series mean something to the classic actor, but Conrad felt that the network didn't even give it an opportunity to succeed!
Conrad didn't give up until the series was revived and renamed; its original title was Baa Baa Black Sheep. "The revival took a lot of hard work, lobbying, presentations, and a little politics," he said.
Despite Conrad's star power and the show's well-crafted episodes, Black Sheep Squadron faced a formidable challenge in its first season. On Tuesday nights, the series was pitted against heavyweights like Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley, making it a tough battle for viewership. However, Conrad was not giving up.
"I thought the show had quality. There's nothing tougher than number one, and NBC put us up against as tough as they could. Now they see with Richard Pryor and 'The Man from Atlantis' that nothing will draw in that time slot. They'd probably love to have back that 27 (ratings) share we had," he added.
