Love and NCIS: Do you remember Leroy Jethro Gibbs' wives?

  CBS Television Distribution

"Love and marriage, love and marriage/Go together like a horse and carriage/This I tell ya, brother/ Ya can't have one without the other."

Frank Sinatra put so much soul into this song, and yes, it was used as the theme song of the series Married...With Children. However, when you think about your favorite characters and how many times they've been married on their shows, you can't help but think, "Yeah, this marriage had one without the other."

For example, NCIS Special Agent and Gunnery Seargent Leroy Jethro Gibbs was married four times—FOUR TIMES. Three of those marriages ended in divorce. Now, we can't say the love in those marriages was nonexistent, but, um, what happened? We'll tell you! Let's get a little bit of backstory on Gibbs's wives.

Watch NCIS on H&I

Monday through Friday at 6 PM & 7 PM Eastern/ Pacific

Shannon Fielding — First wife, murdered (not divorced)

This story is sad. Shannon and Leroy first met in the summer of 1976. They got married in 1981 and had their daughter, Kelly, sometime in 1982. Leroy was deployed, so he missed the birth of their daughter. Shannon witnessed the murder of a Marine at Camp Pendleton, where Gibbs was then based. She identified the murderer as drug dealer Pedro Hernandez. Wanting revenge, Hernandez shot the NCIS agent driving Shannon and Kelly in a minivan, and they were killed in the crash.

Diane Sterling — Second wife, divorced and also murdered

Supposedly, she drained Gibbs's bank account after their divorce and got married to FBI Senior Special Agent Tobias Fornell...and did the same thing to him. Yet, she and Leroy had somewhat of a good relationship after their marriage ended. Diane felt their marriage fell apart because she was in love with him but could not compete with Shannon. She even asks Gibbs and Fornell to save her third husband and invites both to her wedding. Unfortunately, Diane was later killed by Sergei Mishnev.

Stephanie Flynn — Third wife, divorced

The third time is the charm, right? Well, no not for Gibbs. According to Leroy, Stephanie left him but always called him drunk on their anniversary. He would turn off his phone to prevent her from contacting him. In the season five episode "Ex-Files," her current boyfriend is accused of murder, and although he was innocent, she found out he was cheating on her. Stephanie gives Gibbs his military dog tags back and moves to Philadelphia.

Rebecca Chase — Fourth wife, divorced, also known as "the one who cheated"

Rebecca and Leroy got divorced because she cheated on him and wanted to marry the man she cheated with. It was revealed that her "boyfriend" had no idea she was married to Gibbs when they began their relationship. Rebecca enjoyed picking on Gibbs, and they eventually made amends (somewhat).
